Nutrition and Weight Management Program

La Maestra’s five-week Nutrition and Weight Management Program consists of classes covering topics that include: understanding the food pyramid and recommended portion sizes; reading food labels and calories; establishing a personal weight management plan; calculating BMI and physical activity; and disease prevention, blood pressure and cholesterol management.  Each 60-minute session provides participants with tools to improve or better manage their weight, modify behavior, diet and lifestyle; and increase physical activity to prevent or delay the onset of a chronic disease.  In addition, there are three- and six-month follow-ups to monitor progress and assess lifestyle changes.

-Services are provided for overweight patients and their families as well as anyone interested in learning about healthy lifestyles and eating habits. The program is designed to provide culturally and linguistically appropriate food alternatives and advice.

-The curriculum for the five-week nutrition and weight management program is based on prevention of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, obesity, and other weight-related health issues. Topics include:

Class 1: Program overview, introduction to food pyramid and recommended daily portions. Personal weight management plan established.

Class 2: Food portion sizes

Class 3: How to read food labels and calories

Class 4: Calculating BMI and physical activity

Class 5: Disease prevention, blood pressure, cholesterol, and other health education
