Summary
As a Medical Assistant (MA) at La Maestra Community Health Centers, this position performs a wide variety of duties and responsibilities in an approach that emphasizes quality of care, patient safety and customer service. The MA must work collaboratively with the other members of their care team, exhibiting flexibility and a “can-do” attitude. Patient services are a key priority to this position requiring the MA to act as a point of contact with other care teams, departments and sites. The position must epitomize the mission of the organization, always exercising empathy and respect in all patient/staff interactions.
Responsibilities
- Prepare for patient appointments by reviewing patient EHR records prior to appointment; this includes checking updates for recent test results, lab results, referral updates, and needed services
- Maintain exam rooms according to protocols: clean rooms between patients in compliance with infection control standards and ensure all equipment and supplies are prepared
- Provides initial medical screening including: greeting patients and directing them to appropriate exam room. Takes weight, height, temperature, blood pressure, and basic medical history; accurately documents in medical chart
- Alerts provider when patient is ready to be seen; if provider is unavailable, maintains communication with patient keeping them informed of the status of the provider
- Assists provider or nurse upon request during examination of patient, operating with the MA Scope of Practice; practices universal precautions with respect to established safety protocols; facilitates communication between the provider(s) and patient as needed, including translation as appropriate
- Performs clerical duties including but not limited to: answering phones, checking and responding to voicemails, completing forms, typing, faxing, and scanning patient documents into the EHR in a timely manner.
- Provides back-up support as needed; accepts floating assignments to other departments as needed and assigned
- Covers check-out duties when the actual check-out team is unavailable
- Trains for level II and possibly level III MA duties
- Performs/Administers and charts all treatments, procedures, specimen collections (urine, sputum, and throat swabs) and injections within the MA Scope of Practice
- Adheres to all infection control policies and procedures, following organization sterilization and high-level disinfection processes
- Follow and adhere to the approved MA EHR workflows
- Assist nurse and physicians as needed
- Employees will be required to follow any other job-related instructions and perform other job- related duties requested by their supervisor

- Comply and remain familiar and up to date with all the policies, procedures, and protocols outlined in the Medical Assistant Manual
Patient Centered Medical Home Essential Responsibilities (Principals)
- Collaborate with individual patients, their personal providers, and when appropriate the patient’s family to ensure accessible, comprehensive, compassionate, and culturally competent care
- Facilitate care by registries, information technology, health information exchange and other means to assure that patients get the indicated care when and where they need and want it in a culturally and linguistically appropriate manner.
- Ensure all decisions respect patients’ wants, needs, and preferences and that patients have the education and support they require to make decisions and participate in their own care.
- Continually strive to attend to each patients “whole person,” in the context of the patient’s personal and medical history and life circumstances, rather than focusing on a particular disease, organ, or system
Job Requirements
Education: High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent; or 1-2 years’ related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Certification Required: Medical Assistant Certificate and current valid CPR card.
Experience: 1-2 years experience in physician office or hospital setting as a Medical Assistant or Patient Services Representative preferred.
Verbal and Written Skills to perform the job: Bilingual preferred. Familiarity with basic Word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications. Accurate keyboarding skills.
Technical knowledge and skills required to perform the job: Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills and the demonstrated ability to work with diverse individuals and groups. Demonstrate high levels of self-initiation and direction. Knowledge of communities we serve. Knowledge and experience working in medical settings and interacting collaboratively with medical teams. Skill in analyzing situations and making timely decisions.
Physical and Mental Requirements: Work involves sitting, talking, hearing, using hands to handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls, and reaching with hands and arms. - Be familiar with location of nearest fire extinguisher and emergency exits.
- Follow all infection control procedures including blood-borne pathogen protocols
HIPAA/Compliance
- Maintain privacy of all patient, employee and volunteer information and access such information only on a need to know basis for business purposes.
- Comply with all regulations regarding corporate integrity and security obligations. Report unethical, fraudulent or unlawful behavior or activity.
Work Environment
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate

General Requirements
Pre-employment requirements include I-9 verification, physical examination, positive background and reference check results, completed employment application, new hire orientation attendance.
OSHA Compliance
- Comply with all regulations and required schedules regarding OSHA training.
Employee Physical Compliance
- Required physical to be performed annually.
Policies and Procedures Compliance
- Responsible for following all La Maestra Family Clinic policies and procedures.
Meal Period Compliance (Non-exempt employees only.)
- Punch out before 5 hours from the start of shift for meal periods.
Sexual Harassment Training (Management employees only.)
- Comply with all regulations and required schedules regarding sexual harassment training.
