Summary

The Director of Clinical Education & Family Medicine Program Director at La Maestra Family Clinic is responsible for leading the clinical training and educational programs for family medicine residents, physician assistant (PA) residents, nurse practitioner (NP) residents, and medical students. This role includes the oversight of La Maestra’s recognized Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) Family Medicine Residency Program. The Family Medicine ACGME Program Director at La Maestra Family Clinic is responsible for the overall leadership, administration, and strategic direction of the Family Medicine Residency Program. The Director ensures the quality of clinical education, develops curricula, and fosters partnerships with local hospitals and academic institutions, all while supporting La Maestra’s mission of serving culturally diverse and underserved populations.

 

 

Responsibilities

Program Leadership

  • Serves as the Program Director for La Maestra’s Family Medicine Residency Program, overseeing the development and implementation of all educational activities.
  • Maintains ACGME accreditation ensuring compliance with all accreditation standards.
  • Manages clinical education for family medicine, PA, and NP residents, and medical students, ensuring comprehensive training in community-based healthcare.
  • In partnership with department leadership, recruits and retains strong faculty with excellent records in clinical care, research and/or education, as well as designates and evaluates well-qualified physicians to act as volunteer faculty and assist in resident supervision/teaching.
  • In partnership with department and medical education leadership, maintains the residency program mission, and meets all program goals, objectives, and measures of effectiveness.
  • Guides continuous strategic planning for both short-term improvements and long-term growth and development goals.
  • Acts as a liaison with external funding agencies to support educational activities, as appropriate.
  • Attends all required meetings and conferences required by federal, state, and private foundation funders.
  • In partnership with medical education leadership, supervises the professional and administrative staff assigned to the core program of responsibility. Provides continuous feedback, both positive and constructive, as well as assisting in determining appropriate staff selection, delegation of duties and advising on challenging situations/assignments.

Curriculum Development

  • Develop, implement, and regularly update clinical rotations and training programs focused on culturally competent care, preventive health, and chronic disease management.
  • Ensure curricula align with La Maestra’s mission to provide healthcare to underserved communities and meet all accreditation requirements.

Residents and Program

 

  • Ensures the development and operation of the program meets the general and specific standards for accreditation through oversight of all medical and administrative activities, including effective curriculum and ACGME required competencies. Integrates the work of the program with other hospital divisions, as well as external organizations, to ensure fulfillment of all regulatory requirements.
  • Oversees selection and evaluation of residents, including selection of program candidates, evaluation and promotions, disciplinary actions and appeals process and facilitation of career planning.
  • Conducts regular reviews of the program to assess the quality of the educational experience and available resources to ensure that maximum efficiencies and effectiveness are achieved.

Interprofessional Education

  • Promote interprofessional learning by facilitating collaboration among family medicine residents, PAs, NPs, and other healthcare providers.
  • Organize interdisciplinary clinical activities to prepare trainees for team-based care in diverse healthcare settings.

Quality Improvement and Compliance

  • Serve as a key member of La Maestra’s Quality Improvement (QI) Committee, leading initiatives to improve patient outcomes, safety, and health equity.
  • Integrate QI projects into the clinical education framework, encouraging trainees to engage in continuous improvement.
  • Ensure adherence to accreditation standards and actively participate in the accreditation process for the Family Medicine Residency Program.

Community and Stakeholder Engagement

  • Represents La Maestra Family Clinic and the core program on a regional and national stage by participating in pertinent organizations, as well as locally by delivering presentations to, or inclusions on, various boards, medical staffs, councils, community groups or similar bodies.
  • Supports initiatives throughout La Maestra Family Clinic that have a positive impact on medical education, quality improvement, excellence in clinical practice and research (meeting ACGME requirements), as well as other initiatives that involve the care provided by residents and/or faculty of the residency program.

 

Family Physician

  • Provide quality care to patients according to clinical medical protocols and funding source guidelines;
  • Initiate an appropriate assessment of patient’s health status, ranging from focused to comprehensive, depending upon the setting;
  • Provide and manage comprehensive medical care, including diagnosis and nonsurgical treatment of diseases, common health problems, such as infections, influenza and pneumonia, as well as serious, chronic, and complex illnesses for patients of all ages;
  • Monitor patients’ conditions and progress and reevaluate treatments as necessary;
  • Explain procedures and discuss test results or prescribed treatments with patients;
  • Advise patients and community members concerning diet, activity, hygiene, and disease prevention and educate patients about preventative measures to avoid illness;
  • Collect, record, and maintain patient information, such as medical history, reports, and examination results and prepares reports and correspondence related to the work;
  • Refer patient to medical specialist or other practitioner when necessary;
  • Prescribe medication in accordance with California statue and professional practice guidelines;
  • Immunize patients to protect them from preventable diseases;
  • Participate in formulating, implementing, and evaluating objectives, policies, and procedures;
  • Assist with quality improvement activities as required and participates in Quality Assurance and Utilization Reviews;
  • Analyze accumulated health information and collects additional observational, interview, historical, physical examination, and diagnostic data, modifying treatment as appropriate;
  • Maintain and complete patients’ health records or charts legibly, concisely and close it within 48 hours and/or by the end of serviced week;
  • Comply with the regulations and policies required of a Federally Qualified Health Center;

Job Requirements

  • Five years of experience in teaching medical students, residents, or fellows
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills
  • Experience in scholarship (discovery, innovation, or education)
  • Strong organizational management proficiency and trainee oversight competencies
  • Knowledge of the clinical learning environment and micro-teaching skills
  • Familiarity with curriculum development and implementation
  • Graduated from an approved MD or DO medical school program
  • Graduated from an accredited ACGME Family Medicine Residency Program
  • Current certification by the American Board of Family Medicine or by the American Osteopathic Board of Family Practice; and,
  • Current medical licensure in the State of California and appropriate medical staff appointment.
