Job Description
Pay Range: $23.00 to $29.00 per hour, Depends on Experience (DOE)
Summary
The Optician designs, measures, and fits lenses and frames for patients according to written optical prescription or specification. The Optician assists clients with selecting frames. They also measure customers for size of eyeglasses and coordinate frames with facial and eye measurements and optical prescription. The Optician prepares work for grinding and mounting lenses in frames. They also must verify exactness of finished lens spectacles, adjust frames and lens position to fit client and they may shape or reshape frames upon dispensing.
Responsibilities
- Fit and style based on face shape and patient’s personal style
- Adjust frames
- Educate patients on functionality of products
- Evaluate patient prescriptions in accordance with vocational and avocational visual requirements
- Check frames and lenses for centering, surface, axis, quality, etc. prior to dispensing
- Assists patients in frame selection in accordance with optical prescription
- Instructs patients on proper wear and care for eyeglasses
- Train first-time contact lens patients in application and removal, and on proper care, usage, maintenance
- Perform screening and threshold visual field tests
- Maintain records of customer prescriptions, work orders, and payments
- Maintain and update frame and accessories inventories
- Maintain clean and organized work environment
- Neutralize patient’s eyeglasses prior to exam with lensometer
Additional Duties & Responsibilities
- Greet patients and visitors arriving at the clinic.
- Answer phone promptly and courteously, directing calls and messages appropriately.
- Support and assist front desk team in the timely reception of scheduled patients.
- Provide clerical support in processing and assembly of accurate patient records, insurance authorizations, statement and insurance claims and general office tasks.
- Inform patients of costs of care being provided and material fees. Collect and post charges according to protocols; prepare and balance daily financial registers and submit all forms and fees to the accounting or billing departments.
- Maintain knowledge and skills of front desk operations in order to assist as necessary with reception, medical records, scheduling, and billing functions.
- Knowledgeable of third-party payer policies and procedures, documentation requirements, and patient instruction procedures.
- Verify insurance eligibility and obtain required authorizations and documents relating to all optometry visits.
- Obtain accurate changes in pertinent information such as address, phone, employment and insurance coverage and/or carrier.
- Construct chart for new patient. Apply appropriate tags and labels to patient’s chart.
- Maintain forms and office supplies required for front desk activities.
Job Requirements
Education: (Minimum level of education) High School Diploma or GED
Certification required: American Board of Opticianry Certification, Current Valid CPR Certification.
Experience: (Minimum level of experience) 1-2 years’ experience in private office or clinical setting.
Verbal and Written Skills to perform the job: Bilingual (English/Spanish). Familiarity with basic word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.
Technical knowledge and skills required to perform the job: Proven optical sales experience, professional personality and presentation, above average math skills, excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills and the demonstrated ability to work with diverse individuals and groups. Demonstrate high levels of self-initiation and direction. Knowledge of communities we serve. Knowledge and experience working in medical settings and interacting collaboratively with medical teams. Skill in analyzing situations and making timely decisions. Experience in utilizing Electronic Health Records and/or NextGen software preferred.
Physical and Mental Requirements: Work involves sitting, talking, hearing, using hands to handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls, and reaching with hands and arms.
