Summary
The Registered Nurse (RN) at La Maestra Family Clinic provides high-quality, patient-centered nursing care within a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) setting at the National City clinic site. This role supports both attending providers and Family Medicine resident physicians in delivering comprehensive primary care services.
The RN plays a key role in care coordination, patient education, and clinical support, while contributing to a team-based learning environment. The ideal candidate is comfortable working in an academic clinical setting and collaborating with resident physicians at varying levels of training.
Responsibilities
Clinical Nursing Care
- Perform patient triage, assessment, and documentation in the electronic health record (EHR).
- Administer medications, immunizations, and treatments in accordance with clinic protocols and provider orders.
- Assist with in-clinic procedures and ensure proper preparation, sterile technique, and follow-up care.
- Monitor patient conditions and respond appropriately to urgent or emergent situations.
- Support chronic disease management (e.g., diabetes, hypertension) through patient follow-up and education.
Care Coordination and Patient Education
- Provide culturally and linguistically appropriate health education aligned with the La Maestra Circle of Care® model.
- Coordinate referrals, follow-up appointments, and continuity of care across internal and external providers.
- Support population health initiatives, including preventative screenings and quality measures.
Residency Program Support
- Collaborate effectively with Family Medicine resident physicians, providing clinical support and reinforcing best practices.
- Assist residents during patient care activities, including workflow support, patient flow management, and clinical documentation processes.
- Serve as a consistent clinical resource within a teaching environment, helping maintain quality, safety, and efficiency.
- Demonstrate patience and adaptability when working with learners at different stages of training.
Clinic Operations
- Ensure exam rooms are properly stocked, maintained, and compliant with infection control standards.
- Participate in quality improvement (QI) initiatives and clinic performance activities.
- Maintain accurate, timely, and compliant documentation in accordance with FQHC, HRSA, and regulatory requirements.
- Support compliance with clinical protocols, safety standards, and patient confidentiality (HIPAA).
Job Qualifications:
Education and Licensure
- Active and unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of California.
- Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) required; Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required; ACLS preferred.
Experience
- Minimum of 2 years of clinical nursing experience in a primary care, outpatient, or community health setting preferred.
- Experience in an FQHC or safety-net setting strongly preferred.
- Prior experience working in a teaching clinic or with resident physicians is a plus.

Verbal and Written Skills to perform the job: Bilingual preferred. Familiarity with basic word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications. Accurate on keyboarding skills.
Technical knowledge and skills required to perform the job: Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills and the demonstrated ability to work with diverse individuals and groups. Demonstrate high levels of self-initiation and direction. Knowledge of communities we serve. Knowledge and experience working in medical settings and interacting collaboratively with medical teams. Skill in analyzing situations and making timely decisions.
